Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

Keeping me right

THERE WILL be lambs in the field next door very shortly. The shepherd has dropped off several hundredweight of neeps for the feeding ewes, so once they and their lambs arrive, we – the dogs and I, that is – must go slightly further afield for the early morning walks.

Winter’s demise

BROWN PREDOMINATES as the countryside colour at this time of the agricultural cycle. It looks like the last of the fields are being ploughed now, and the landscape is one of a countryside-in-waiting for conditions to improve and sowing to start.

Strange tongues

A SOLITARY tree pokes its silhouette above the skyline of a hill in the distance. It is the only tree that stands beside the path to the Brown Caterthun.

Changeing seasons

IRON HARD early mornings which greeted us at the beginning of the past week turned into two peerless sun-filled and cloudless days. Sunday and Monday were special round here and I hope the quite exceptional weather was shared all over.
