Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

PANDEMONIUM REIGNS when grandchildren come to stay. Last weekend we expected only grandson James to be visiting, but son Robert and daughter-in-law Kate blew in with Cecily and Fergus. The decibels rapidly rose to unforeseen levels!
AN IRISH girl tells me that last Tuesday was St Brigid's Day, and that the Irish traditionally regard the first of February as the first day of spring. The fair Saint would have got a healthy suntan if she'd spent the day in our garden, and with Irish luck it was a foretaste of what we can expect to come.
