Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

Early steps

THE WOODPECKERS have been the stars of the garden show this week. A family comes to the bird table each morning and they provide endless diversion.

Nature’s bounty

THE DOYENNE and I feel we are still very much in touch when our friend's children ask if they can come and see us. Except of course they are no longer the children, because they bring their own offspring with them. It's a great compliment when youngsters enjoy visiting, joining the adults and adding to the day's pleasure.

‘CAST NOT a clout/ till May month is out' has characterised the unseasonal weather over the past month. Not so much the rain, because May can sometimes be pretty wet, but the cold northerthly winds when we should be enjoying the milder prevailing westerlies
