Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

On the scent

IT'S SURPRISING what the dogs and I come across on our walks   Some are long dead and in a state of high decomposition. As a puppy, Macbeth rolled joyfully in such remains – dog owners will know only too well what I'm talking about – and galloped back to share the exhilaration of his latest fragrance with us   He was always much affronted when we threw him in a bath for his troubles. Life is …. a blessing money cannot buy

 €œTIME SPENT laughing is time spent with the dogs € – a Japanese proverb apparently, but I was uncertain whether it was really what I had heard on the radio as I got dressed   I was quite ready to accept that it is so, although I think that strangers meeting Macbeth for the first time might find little to laugh about if he breathes on them. THEY SAY there are 97 Eskimo words to describe snow   Be that as it may I have trimmed my list down to one, which is concise and to the point and I hope conveys how browned-off I am with snow that fell some seven weeks ago and still hasn't shifted.

O’er the Border

I'VE DISCOVERED that Hogmanay in Cumbria (it used to be Westmoreland) is much like the real thing we celebrate in Scotland   The Doyenne persuaded me across the Border to see out the old and bring in the New Year and as it meant I could drink my brother-in-law's whisky it seemed an admirable idea!
