Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

HOUSEMAID'S DESPAIR they called it back in Victorian times     I'm referring to asparagus and the all-too-short season for this delicious spring delicacy has begun again.

LIKE ME, you may have imagined that the prolonged snow and ice of the winter would have delayed spring and the farmers' sowing programme   The opposite appears to be the case   I've spoken to several farmers in recent days and they are, if anything, up to a week ahead of last year's timetable.

I LIKE to keep an eye on the lochan at the back of the house at this time of year   The wildlife sightings are more quality than quantity for a lot of the waterfowl are paired off and, if not already nesting, certainly getting domestic.

SCOTLAND'S BORDER country is amongst our favourite destinations, not just because son James and his family live there, but because over the years we've enjoyed so many interesting and fun visits to this historic region   When I think about it, the Borders are nearly as good as the Angus glens and the Braes of Angus which I walked with my father; but I've walked the Moorfoot Hills too.
