Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

Culture vultures

COUNTRY MICE went to town last weekend. Our thoughtful family gave the Doyenne and me a weekend break at a destination of our choice. We chose Glasgow because it is a city we hardly know and it’s very lively culturally. It was a good choice and we enjoyed every minute.

Stroppy squirrel

“WHAUR COWSLIPS kiss the daffodils” – it’s quite a common sight when the dogs and I are out walking. The daffs are pretty well over now and narcissi are flowering in their place, and the cheerful cowslips are in full bloom. When I was a youngster great swathes of them brightened up the riverbanks and I went out picking them with my father for his cowslip wine.

Reeking of history

THEY TALK of Aberdeenshire’s historic Castle Trail which features the grandest and most important castles of the north-east. As I drove over Garvock Hill above Laurencekirk, which links the Howe of the Mearns with the coastal plain, it occurred to me that there’s another castle trail right here on our doorstep.
