Being out in the countryside with my dogs gives me time to think. I’ve learnt the pleasure of solitude without being lonely, and that’s a good feeling for me.

The Davidson Legacy to Harley-Davidson® – The Scottish Banner

It was old fashioned good luck that saved the near-derelict cottage known locally as the ‘old Davidson cottage’. Local tradition had it that in the mid-1800s it was tenanted by Alexander Davidson whose grandsons were the Davidson side of what has become the Harley-Davidson motor empire.

A leisurely amble

THE SPINE of hills running from the Lower Northwaterbridge (which crosses the River North Esk a mile upriver from the rivermouth) to Stonehaven separates the plain of the Mearns from the coastal plain. A tracery of roads, some of them old drove roads, criss-crosses the hills.

EAST, WEST home’s best. You can say much the same about north and south. It’s grand to go visiting but it’s good to get back to the familiarity of your own kail yaird – Dancing in the moonlight / Singing in the rain / Oh, it’s good to be back home again.

THIS WEEK I went hunting for butterflies. I’d read Robin Page’s Country Diary in last Saturday’s Daily Telegraph – no, I don’t have split loyalties, but it’s useful to know what is happening in other parts of the British countryside – and he was reporting blizzards of butterflies on his Cambridgeshire farm.
